Thompson prioritizes Governor's Cup title over BPC award

SCOTTIE Thompson is currently taking his mind off his biggest shot at winning a first ever PBA Best Player of the Conference award as Barangay Ginebra bids to retain its Governor's Cup title against rival Meralco.

Thompson emerged as the favorite to bag the highest individual award of the conference when he finished second behind Robert Bolick of also-ran NorthPort in the BPC statistical points race by the end of the semifinals.

But gratified he may be at the prospect of winning the honor, the high-flying wingman knows what his priority is at the moment.

"Sa ngayon focused muna ako dito sa finals, kasi mas importante ito para sa team," said Thompson.

"Personally, happy ako na nakasama ako sa pinagpi-pilian, pero as for now, dito muna ako sa finals magfo-focus."

Buoyed by his remarkable playoffs performance, Thompson jumped four notches high in the statistical leader to finish second behind Bolick with 35.0 statistical points.

The NorthPort guard remains at no. 1 with 39.9 sps behind a league-leading 21.8 points, 8.8 assists, and 2.2 steals averages, although the Batang Pier's failure to reach the playoffs could badly hurt the campaign of Bolick.

Three players just below Thompson are Matthew Wright of Phoenix, NorthPort's Arwind Santos, and rookie Mikey Williams of TNT, all of which didn't make it as far as the semifinals.

The 28-year-old Thompson, a five-time champion, hasn't won the BPC award before, but was named Finals MVP in the 2018 Commissioner's Cup during a season in which he was also the recipient of the Most Improved Player award.

His last individual award was in the 2020 season when Thompson was voted the Samboy Lim Sportsmanship awardee.
