PBA Recap: Dyip Import Williams to lead team def. Blackwater

The Terrafirma Dyip rallied behind their Dyip import Jordan Williams's 57-point explosion as they defeated the Blackwater Bossing, 119-106, in the ongoing 2023 PBA Governors Cup.

The Terrafirma Dyip started off hot in the game with a huge 30-14 lead at the end of the first quarter. As they play catch up in the next quarters, the Blackwater Bossing had managed to cut down the deficit by two in the middle of the fourth quarter, 92-94.

In the last three minutes of the match, the Blackwater Bossing closed the gap to three, 101-104, before the Terrafirma Dyip had a 15-5 run to win the match, 119-106.

Terrafirma Dyip import Jordan Williams led his team with 57 points, 11 rebounds, and five assists while Juami Tiongson added 27 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. Eric Camson was the spark off the bench with 17 points and nine rebounds.

For the side of the Blackwater import, Troy Williams scored 55 points, 14 rebounds, and five assists in his debut in the PBA. Blackwater Bossing team captain JVee Casio had 14 points while RK Ilagan and Renato Ular combined for 21 points.

With the win, the Terrafirma Dyip improved to a 2-2 win-loss record while the Blackwater Bossing slid down to a 1-4 record.

Before his 57-point explosion, Jordan Williams had been averaging 35 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 3.3 assists. After the match, the 32-year-old thanked his teammates and his coaches, led by head coach Johnedel Cardel, for the trust in his best game so far.

He said, “It's basically just the confidence from my teammates and my coach. They trust me to be the leader and take over when it's time to finish the game. Just shout out to my teammates for trusting in me and believing in me.”

Prior to their win against the Blackwater Bossing, Terrafirma Dyip's last win came at the expense of the Meralco Bolts last January 28, where Jordan Williams contributed 29 points, eight rebounds, three assists, and five steals.

Unknown to many, Jordan Williams was just the second choice of the team. According to head coach Johnedel Cardel, their first choice decided to sign with another team who was offering more money.

“Actually, he is not our first choice. However, our first choice signed with another team with a more lucrative offer. Then, I saw Jordan. I said, 'This is fine. His name is Jordan, maybe he will become Michael Jordan,” the mentor said in Tagalog after the match.

Meanwhile, the Blackwater Bossing paraded a new import in Troy Williams as they relegated Shawn Glover to the reserved/injured list.

Before going to the PBA, Troy played in the NBA for the Memphis Grizzlies, Houston Rockets, and Sacramento Kings before settling in Taiwan with the Taoyuan Leopards.

In his four games with the Blackwater Bossing, Shawn Glover was averaging 24.3 points, 10 rebounds, and four assists per game. In comparison, Troy Williams had 55 points, 14 rebounds, and five assists, proving that he is the better import.

Looking at the statistics, the Terrafirma Dyip won in all aspects of the match. Terrafirma Dyip had a 44% shooting efficiency with 40 out of 90 field goal attempts making the bucket, compared to the 41% shooting efficiency of the Blackwater Bossing.

In two-point field goals, Terrafirma Dyip had 54% efficiency while the Blackwater Bossing had 47%. Aside from bench points and fast break points, the only thing that the Blackwater Bossing had a lead compared to the Terrafirma Dyip was their three-point shooting efficiency with 35%, higher compared to their opponent’s dismal 27%.

The Terrafirma Dyip had 52 points in the paint, compared to 38 of the Blackwater Bossing. The team also recorded more second-chance points at 21 than the eight of the Blackwater Bossing. They also capitalized on Blackwater Bossing’s 18 turnovers, converting them to 21 points.

In the rebounding department, the Terrafirma Dyip showed their mighty defense with 57 compared to 50 of the Blackwater Bossing. They also had more assists at 19, compared to 17 of Blackwater, and steals at nine, compared to four of Blackwater.

The Terrafirma Dyip also managed to limit their turnovers to 12 and their personal fouls to 27.

When is the next PBA Game?

The Terrafirma Dyip will next face the TNT Tropang Giga on Saturday, February 11, while the Blackwater Bossing will try to end their three-game skid against the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters on Sunday, February 12.
