Football Match Highlights on 5 Best Goals of 2022/23

With just over two weeks to go before the FIFA World Cup break, it's a good time to take stock of the European season so far, and specifically the quality of goals that have been scored.

In this FIFA Highlights article, we'll pick five of the best goals scored in all domestic competitions, covering the Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A, and Ligue 1.

Son Heung-min vs Leicester (Premier League, September 2022)

The South Korea international was the Premier League's joint-top scorer last season with 23 goals but had not netted in Tottenham's first eight games of the season and was dropped to the bench for his side's home game against strugglers Leicester City in September.

But having been brought on as a substitute for Brazilian forward Richarlison at 59 minutes and with his side 3-2 up in a close game, Son curled an unstoppable right-footed shot into the top corner to send the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium into a frenzy.

Son wasn't finished there though; 11 minutes later he struck a left footer into the opposite corner of the net before completing his hat-trick two minutes later.

An incredible cameo display, proving that form is temporary but class is permanent. Son is one of the brightest forward talents in the game, combining pace, industry and a shooting threat with both feet. He'll shoulder South Korea's hopes at the FIFA World Cup in November; such is his quality, the Asian nation will have a real chance of progressing through their group against rivals Uruguay, Ghana and Portugal.

Lionel Messi vs. Clermont (Ligue 1, August 2022)

Unless you've been living under a rock for the past two decades, you'll know what an extraordinary talent Lionel Messi is. The Argentine genius has broken untold scoring records and won pretty much every trophy going in European club football. Virtually every time you watch him play, he does something that makes your jaw drop to the floor in sheer wonder.

Despite that, the Argentine attacker netted only six goals in his debut campaign at the Parc des Princes. But he started this season with a bang, scoring twice in the final 10 minutes against Clermont Foot.

For his first goal, the ex-Barcelona forward scurried at the Clermont defence, picked out Neymar and then slid a low shot into the corner after receiving a return pass from the Brazilian.

But his second took the breath away. He chested down a long ball from Leandro Paredes and then converted with a stunning overhead kick four minutes from time. Messi is now 35 and his career can't go on forever, a fact which makes you appreciate moments like these all the more. Most football fans will be hoping to witness a few more at the FIFA World Cup next month, when the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner bids to lift the trophy for the first time.

Allan Saint-Maximin vs. Wolves (Premier League, August 2022)

Allan Saint-Maximin is a player who, on his day, is a match-winner. His dribbling skills give defenders nightmares, and he has the ability to score some truly incredible goals. His strike against the Wolves is a classic example.

Newcastle was trailing 1-0 thanks to a superb first-half effort from Ruben Neves — himself no stranger to a long-range wonder goal.

In fact, the Portugal international's net-buster would have been a goal-of-the-month contender until Saint-Maximin popped up with an absolutely outrageous first-time volley in the 90th minute, leaving goalkeeper Jose Sa with no chance.

The big question mark against the mercurial attacker has always been his consistency; it could prevent him from securing a place in France's ridiculously talented FIFA World Cup squad. While a snub from Didier Deschamps would be a personal blow, it would be great news for his club manager Eddie Howe as ASM will be fresh and hungry to help Newcastle mount an assault on the Premier League top six in the new year.

Ok, so Son's Premier League goal against Leicester was special. But his volley against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League was something else.

It's fair to say that the South Korean was in the mood when the Europa League holders visited the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. He ran the German club's defenders ragged during a mesmeric performance that he capped with one of the most emphatic strikes you'll ever see.

Some credit must go to Pierre-Emile Højbjerg for his perfectly weighted cross, but Son's timing and skill to smash it into the roof of the net with his left foot was world-class.

This may be the best goal of the lot — and not just for the finish.

Erling Haaland has made an incredible start to his career at Manchester City, scoring goals for fun. But his strike against his former club Dortmund felt like a truly iconic moment — one that announced his arrival at the Premier League champions.

It was helped by Joao Cancelo's delicious assist; the Portuguese looped the ball over the BVB defense with the outside of his right foot. Haaland still had a lot to do but showed more strength, speed, power, and acrobatic ability than his marker and threw himself at the ball, kung-fu kicking it into the back of the net.

Haaland will score a lot of goals this season, but he'll have to go a long way to net one more spectacular than this.
